In a Physiotherm cabin you can adjust the infrared intensity which in turn adjusts the surface temperature and therefore the frequency of FIR. This allows you to play around with the system until you find the level of intensity (and frequency) which is best for you as an individual. No other infrared sauna offers you this level of control over your infrared therapy session.

The most important beneficial effects of Far Infrared heat are NOT determined by the frequency of Infrared wavelength but the level of Infrared intensity on the surface of the skin which is measured in milliWatt per square centimetre (mW/CM2).

How important is Far Infrared frequency for an effective Far Infrared sauna?

Due to the mass of information on the internet about the supposed importance of specific micron ranges for achieving the greatest benefit to health, Physiotherm researched the different types of heaters widely available (including fibreglass carbon panel heaters and basic ceramic and alloy heaters) to ascertain the relative merits between them.

Their findings were fundamentally disappointing with regard to the physiological benefits of carbon panel heaters; whose peak micron output around 8microns related to warming of the skin of only 15-25mW/cm². This is far below the optimal range of 40-90mW/cm² necessary to impart deep warmth to the body to raise the core temperature and deliver the circulation and sweat responses from which the many health benefits are achieved.It was concluded that their primary contribution was to warm the air in the cabin and not the body meaning the therapeutic benefit was much reduced.

This difference is graphically explained which shows that when a heater surface temperature is low the intensity is then too low to be really functional. The opposite can be true of heater systems which operate at much higher temperatures (and shorter wavelengths of around 4 microns and less) in this case the infrared intensity is too high and can be uncomfortable, as was found in lower quality ceramic and alloy infrared elements.

As with many things in life the secret is in finding the right balance; in this case between intensity and frequency to deliver optimal individual comfort and effectiveness.
